I also have a 42 Plasma Vizio I bought at Costco about a year ago . Love it , and no burn in probs yet . It has a built in utility called a cleaner that you can run to clear up ghost images before they become burn in . I paid $999 and that was a yr ago . I am grandfathered in on Costco's satisfaction guarantee so I can return it for a new one regardless of the reason ( burn in , scratched screen , dead , anything ). I got it just before they tightened down on their return policy .
I went back and forth between plasma and LCD before I finally settled on an LCD.
Plasma is considered by many to be the better technology and has higher contrast ratio than LCD. But, plasma has some cons like the burn in issue. The biggest negative for me personally was that the plasmas I saw had more screen glare than LCDs.
Most everyone I've talked to recommends Sony as the top brand, but in doing some research I found out that Samsung actually manufactures some of the Sony's LCD models.
The other thing I would recommend is making sure the tv has an easy way to switch between standard definition (4:3) and high definition (16:9) mode. Most of the programming is still standard def which doesn't look very good in high def mode. I have a button on my remote that allows me to switch between standard and high def.
Like you said, Plasma does look better in a dark room and the burn in thing manufactures claim they have that solved in plasma tv's. I think LCD looks much better myself so my overall vote goes for LCD.
LCD also uses less energy than plasma to run.

i've got a 50 inch plasma in my living room and it works great, it was $2100 and well worth it
all the research i did said that if you are looking for a wide viewing area then go with plasma, but if youre just gonna be looking at it straight on then LCD is the way to go...i have 4 roommates and a big living room so we have people over watching things all the time so they have to be able to see from the side and plasma has worked out great
There are a lot of variables. Used to plasma cost a ton, but the prices have bottomed out now. The burn-in issue is almost nonexistent anymore. Generally if you are going over 40" you are probably better off going with plasma. If you are below 40" you will probably have to go LCD because plasmas generally arent manufactured that small.
If there is a lot of light in your room, you are much better off going LCD because of the true glass panel on a plasma will have more glare.
The viewing angles arent much different on the flat panels with either technology. Also, before a couple of years ago, when you bought an LCD over 40" the cost were very high also. Their costs have not been able to drop quite like plasma, but they are more affordable now. Overall picture quality almost always goes to the plasma. The skin tones are much better, and you do not have as much possiblity for artifacting on fast moving objects. LCD has caught up to plasma quite a bit, and the answer isn't the same for everyone. Both do a great job anymore.
I also looked at a 50 inch plasma, and if I'd had the room, I probably would have bought it. But, with limited space, I settled for a 37" LCD.
Right now, I'm undecided between DISH network and DirecTV for HD programming. DirecTV seems to offer a little more for the price, but my viewing consists primarily of a couple cable channels like TLC and Discovery. The rest is ESPN and networks for sports on the weekends.
Blu-Ray dvd players are still very expensive, and I'm not sure they're going to come down anytime soon.
Don't bother with either just get ya a DLP. It's amazing, it's the mirrors.
Probably you use items containing an LCD every day. They are all around us, in laptop computers, digital clocks, microwave ovens, CD players, TVs and many other electronic appliances. LCDs are common fordi They offer some real advantages over.
